Efacec was selected for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), and operations and maintenance (O&M) of a 41 MWp solar plant, located in Metoro, north of Mozambique. With an area of about 138 hectares, this infrastructure has a production capacity of 68 GWh per year. The operation of this solar power plant is expected to start in the end of 2020.
It will be the Solar Power plant with the highest installed capacity in Mozambique to date, making it a flagship project for Efacec, that operates in Mozambique for more than 20 years, reinforcing the brand presence in the market and in the region.
The project is being developed and managed by Neoen and is jointly owned by Neoen and EDM through the company Central Solar Metoro.
The agreement includes the supply of full EPC, including the interconnection in High Voltage to the EDM’s substation and associated guarantees for the performance of solar power plant, as well as a long term contract for the O&M of the plant.
This plant contributes to the achievement of Mozambique goals for the diversification of the Energy Mix targets and decentralisation of the energy generation, with the aim to give an access to energy to 100% of the population by 2030.
The generated energy will be sold through a Power Purchase Agreement contracted with EDM.
Efacec develops solutions for solar systems, including self-consumption, hybrid systems and large-scale PV plants on a turnkey basis. Efacec positions itself as a main player in the energy sector, with about 300 MW installed worldwide and 133 MW under O&M
Norconsult offers services aimed at social planning, engineering design and architecture. Norconsult’s services includes planning and consultancy services across every phase of a project: Norconsult works with clients from concept phase and general plans to engineering design and operational support.
Norconsult is a long term partner to EDM, it is currently providing Consulting Services for Technical Assistance to Electricidade de Mocambique (EDM) in relation to Large Generation and Transmission Projects in Mozambique. The project ("TA Large") includes assistance with regard to development of investment projects and training of EDM personnel in this area.
Norconsult has worked with EDM on multiple projects over the last decade with services primarily contributing to transparent and sustainable development of the energy sector in Mozambique by strengthening EDM at this very critical stage of future investments in power generation and transmission in Mozambique and the SADC region and to strengthen EDM's business capability in development, structuring, negotiation, financing and implementation of large power generation and transmission projects.

When Business Excellence last visited Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), the focus of the interview was the changes that Mozambique was undergoing. The company had just received financing from the World Bank and the European Investment Bank to the tune of $200 million and plans were being put in place to improve the energy links that existed between Mozambique and neighbouring countries like South Africa.
The recently re-elected president of Tanzania, John Magufuli stated in November 2020 that his government predicts economic growth of 8% for the country over the next five years. This isn’t unreasonable given that the country’s GDP has grown by a CAGR of around 7% over the five years of Mr. Magufuli’s first mandate. Given that over half of the country’s export income comes from gold, the success of Shanta Gold is inextricably tied with the fortunes of Tanzania.
