Archaeologists have shown that Ecuador’s capital Quito has a history which extends back over 5,000 years, making it one of the oldest cities in the world. This is at least in part due to the city’s famous geography: at an altitude of 2,850 metres above sea level, defenders of the city were able to see enemies coming a few hours in advance. These days, it just means the views are spectacular.


 

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has underlined the importance of energy security, not just in Europe, but across the world. In a great island nation like Jamaica - which has historically relied on outsiders to provide its fossil fuels - this is doubly true. The company responsible for ensuring that Jamaicans can access safe abundant energy is the Jamaica Public Services Company (JPS), the subject of this article.


The EllisDon Infrastructure Justice consortium has been awarded a CAD1.2 billion (US$941 million) fixed-price contract for the Thunder Bay Correctional Complex project by Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of the Solicitor General in Canada. EllisDon Capital Inc., EllisDon Facilities Services Inc., EllisDon Corporation, Zeidler Architecture Inc., and DLR Group Inc. are part of the EllisDon Infrastructure Justice consortium.


It has been a little over a decade since commercial mining began at the Canadian Malartic Mine in northwestern Quebec, Canada. With production of over 55,000 tonnes per day, the mine is not only the largest in Canada but one of the largest in the world. In 2020, however, the partnership behind the mine announced that it was going to begin construction of surface infrastructure and an underground exploration ramp, in a project known as the Odyssey project.


Codelco, Chile's National Copper Corporation, is the world's leading copper producer and one of Chile's largest companies. The Codelco Salvador Division is located in the district of Diego de Almagro, in the Atacama Region. Its operations, which date back to 1959, are located in the Andes mountain range at 2,600 meters high, 1100 kilometers north of Santiago. This Division has been in operation since 1959 and has two types of deposits, the underground "Inca" mine and the open pit "Campamento Antiguo" and "Damiana Norte" mines.


Costa Rica is a Latin American success story. Over the past quarter century, it has enjoyed consistent economic growth, while managing to maintain its unique biodiversity, thanks to Costa Rica being the only country in the world to have reversed deforestation. It has managed to do all this while growing its salaries by over 300% over the past two decades. For any country, this would constitute remarkable progress.
