Rather appropriately for the internet giant, the announcement was made public online by Omid Kordestani, senior vice president of global sales and business development, on The Official Google Blog. The lay-offs are not the result of the global economic crisis, for once, however, as Kordestani made clear. Instead the reason is down to the companyÔÇÖs growth. ÔÇ£Google has grown very quickly in a very short period of time,ÔÇØ he said. ÔÇ£When companies grow that quickly it's almost impossible to get everything rightÔÇöand we certainly didn't. ÔÇ£In some areas we've created overlapping organizations which not only duplicate effort but also complicate the decision-making process. That makes our teams less effective and efficient than they should be,ÔÇØ he continued. With Google employees (referred to as Googlers by the company) numbering over 20,000 around the world, the cuts represent less than one percent of the workforce. Earlier this year, the company decided to lay off 100 of its recruiters because it was taking on fewer people. Kordestani said in the blog that some of those affected in this round may be able to find other positions within the company, and that Google was prepared to allow them time to do so. Those who leave the company will be offered severance packages, he said.
