Al Habtoor Leighton clinches Qatari water contract


Al Habtoor Leighton Group has won a QR750 million (Ôé¼145 million) contract to build new water stations in two Qatari communities, it has been announced.

The project, awarded by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation, is to include the development of water infrastructure for the Duhail and Umm Qarn communities.
 
The Duhail project will involve the construction of six concrete reservoirs and associated buildings; a 16-kilometre pipeline; and road modifications and landscaping.
 
Work at Umm Qarn will include three concrete reservoirs and a 700-metre pipeline, along with the buildings, road works and landscaping.
 
The project will commence this year and is due to be completed by 2012.

Al Habtoor LeightonÔÇöthe Middle Eastern unit of AustraliaÔÇÖs Leighton HoldingsÔÇöis currently also tendering for other projects in Qatar, worth around Ôé¼2 billion in total. One of these projects is the expansion of Doha port.
 
The firm has also recently won the contract for a project at Khalifa Port and is also involved with building work on Saadiyat Island.
 
The Qatari government is currently increasing its spend on infrastructure in the Gulf state, which has suffered less severely from the global downturn than other areas of the world.
 
In addition to Qatar, Leighton has said it is currently seeing particular growth in Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
