It is a truth universally acknowledged that everyone has to have a mobile phone these days and Azerbaijanis are no exception. 9.4 million people live in Azerbaijan, and while there are only a little less than 1.5 million landline subscribers there are more than ten million mobile network connections. In this, Azerbaijan is not very different from any other modern economy, but things have developed faster here than in many European countries.

Signed by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on his first visit to China, the deals are for the building of a railway line, an energy project and to improve wildlife protection.

In a statement, his office said the deals with China were a "massive boost" to his government. "The rail link, particularly, is important in the context of East Africa's shared goal of ensuring quicker movement of peoples, goods and services," it quoted Mr Kenyatta as saying.

It will link the Kenyan border town of Malaba with the port of Mombasa, one of the busiest in Africa.

The agreement with state-run Ethio Telecom will help to double the number of mobile phone subscribers in the country to more than 50 million, while at the same time increasing 3G Internet access nationwide.

Ethio Telecom’s deal with ZTE, China's second-biggest telecoms equipment maker, is part of a telecommunications expansion project worth $1.6 billion.

Maersk Line, the world's biggest container shipper, which accounts for approximately 15 percent of the globe’s total container shipping capacity, reported a $439 million profit for the second quarter of 2013, up from $227m million a year earlier.

The group as a whole, which includes oil drilling and other transport businesses, saw profits fall eleven percent to $856m, smaller than expected.

Profits rose 1.5 percent, compared to the same time last year, to 63.1bn yuan ($10.3 billion) in the six months to June, with the results buoyed by a strong rise in wireless data revenue. Operating revenue meanwhile rose ten percent to 303.1bn yuan, even in the face of stiff competition from its fellow state-owned rivals and the country’s slower economic growth.

The company said its subscriber base rose by around 30 million to 740 million users at the end of 2012.

The company’s net profit for the April-to-June period came in at a better-than-expected $174 million, up from $141 million a year ago, boosted by the doubling in the sale of mobile devices.

The bank made a net profit of A$7.7 billion ($7 billion) for the year to 30 June, up 8 percent from the previous year. This impressive figure is the result of a combination of growing deposits and a higher margin between the rate of interest earned on loans and the rate paid out to savers.
